Introduction to Czech Beer
Czech Breweries

This is a list of a few pubs in the Vinohrady area of Prague. It's an area of 19th century tennements, some of them quite elegant and obviously built for the middle classes.

It's becoming a refuge for the better-off locals, fleeing the annoyance of the city centre. As they displace the area's more working-class inhabitants it will be interesting to see how many of the straightforward pubs remain.

Despite being no more than an invigourating walk from the old town, few tourists make it this far. This is reflected in the prices, which are about 25% lower than in the parts more frequented by foreigners.

If you don't fancy a 15-minute walk, take the Metro to Námestí Miru.

A very strange mixture of pictures - Svejk next to Emperor Franz Josef - are to be found in this large pub-restaurant. Outside it still has the old painted glass signs advertising beer (Branik 12% dark), which it unfortunately no longer sells.

Sometime around 1966, when it appears the last restoration was done, it must have been quite posh. Now it's a bit down-at-heel, without being rough or scummy. Apparently the addition of a vase of plastic flowers on each table lifted it from IV to III Skupina (if anyone out there still remembers the old class system of Czech pubs).

Brezance is a normal corner pub in an area of 19th Century tennements. Once through the door (usually a good way to get into any pub), you're in a room containing the zinc bar, a fair bit of room to stand and a couple of tables. Carry on further, and there's a square dining room whose tables are sporting the usual check, this time green and white.

A locals pub, where the Gambrinus 12% is a very reasonable 13 kr and two can eat for 120 kr. Quite spartan, but not in any way scruffy. At the back there is also a salónek, a sort of snug. The old 'Obed' signs painted on the window should tell you here is somewhere where not all the past is gone.

A tiny bar a few steps up from street level. Its style is bland international: all chrome and plastic. Once again, a black and white telly perched on a chair provided a touch of class, although here the sound was turned down. 12kr a half litre.

A brilliant tiny pub with no frontage on the street but which is entered from a courtyard. Behind the taproom is another room, partly partitioned to form two smaller spaces. Everywhere there are old wooden cartwheels and yokes hanging.

Beautiful nicotine-stained walls match the yellow lino of the floor wonderfully. The tile-topped wooden tables each have their own centrepiece of a filthy ashtray piled high with fag ends. The air is thick with smoke and the locals are thick with beer. Yes, this is Czech drinking in the old style. And unbelievably cheap - 7.50 kr a half litre!

Since a wrote the descrition below, Bulínů has undergone a major renovation and become more food-oriented.
Another good example of a tasteless refurbishment which, through the softening effect of the passing years, has acquired a sort of quirky sweetness. Its early 70's feel - fat pine furniture, lino floor and aluminium doors - leaves one drowned in waves of nostalgia (let's stick some Bay City Rollers on the jukebox).

Appropriately, it's decorated with a wide array of Prazdroj memorabilia: calendars, posters, etc.. It's worth noting that the 10%, a drink not really appreciated outside the Czech Republic, is noticeably more popular with the locals than its big brother the 12%.

This is a typical Prague corner local. The bar and a small standing area are by the door, with a couple of rooms with tables behind. Fairly spartanly furnished, with only a couple of small prints as decoration. Simple wooden furniture and the tables have the common red and white checked tablecloths.

A very local atmosphere, mostly male and with plenty of blokes in overalls who look like they've just finished their shifts.

An update from John Holland reports that Posty has been "modernised". Oh dear.

This is a large corner pub handily placed right next to the tram stop. It consists of a small taproom with a single table and a few seats at the bar, plus a large, slightly posh, dining room. The latter even has a carpet on the floor (luxury indeed for this part of Prague).

The taproom has the usual mass of slot machines, but also a splendid Stalin poster saying 'It's time to give up alcohol, comrades'. Now that's just what I need for my front room. The rest of the wall space is taken up up with equally bizarre old posters and signs, many of which look like they've come from a collective farm. Beer 10 & 12 kr a half litre.

A typical corner Czech boozer with a taproom at the front followed by a more restauranty room to the rear.

Amonngst the old adverts that litter the walls a re few suitably beery examples. My Favourite? "Staropramen Granat 15° Exportní" As shame they don't sell that version rather than the puny 11° one currently brewed..

It was reassuring at 10:30 on a Friday morning to be the only customer not drinking beer. It's nice to see not everything has changed in the Czech Republic. Though one bloke did only have a half.

I was very pleasantly surprised by Kelt, served on mixed gas pressure. A surprisingly roasty attempt at a stout, that was really rather nice.

Good old-fashioned drinking hole. The front room has a couple of tables and a few stools at the small bar. Up a few stairs at the back is a restaurant room. The walls have the pine panelling so loved in 70's renovations and there is a tacky false ceiling. For some reason the sweet display behind the bar is dominated by Mozart kugels. How odd. It's somehow reassuring to see that the world's most honestly named cigarette brand, Start, is still going strong.

In English, the name means "The Hippo". Don't ask me why. I couldn't see many hanging about in the neighbourhood. Maybe they only come out after you've had ten beers.

Opposite is a posh shopping centre which seems to have been converted from an indoor market. It doesn't look as if it and the pub share many customers. Beer was 10 & 12 kr.

This corner pub opposite the commercial law court looks tarted up from the outside, but don't be put off: inside it's fine. A little plain, perhaps, but happily free of cigarette smoke. By the entrance is the usual serving area and taproom with rooms leading off on either side to make a large L-shaped pub. The Budvar tablecoths are a nice touch, but are about the only decorative flourish.

The food is wholesome and good value at 40-50 kr. At 10 kr the beer is decidedly cheap. Most customers only seemed to be there to eat, so it's a bit dead. Good if you want a quiet meal.
