Terminus is a weird fake Irish pub / specialist beer café combination that is much better than that description makes it sound. It's also very handy for the station and is a hotel, too. And they've had Westvleteren on all my visits. Just to pump up the bizarreness level a notch further, the pub also has some connection with Fish. Not the marine lifeform, but the singer with crap band Marillion. At least he has taste in pubs. If you're interested, there's a report of Fish's 45th birthday, which was held in Terminus. The beer selection is very good, including, as already mentioned, Westvleteren. So what are you waiting for - head down to Terminus now. Just take a peak through the window before entering to make sure Fish isn't sat at the bar.

Bar Le Duc is more a beer pub with attached brewery than a straight brewpub. The bar has been around since 1975, but the brewery only opened in 1999. It's a dark brown café with all the usual features - lots of age-darkened wood and beer-themed decoration. I've never been a fan of exposed brickwork and this pub has it in spades. Including (as you can see in the photo to the left) a slightly duff bar counter. At the rear is an odd raised area featuring, you guessed it, more exposed bricks. There is an extensive food menu and a large selection of whiskies, too. And before I forget, Bar le Duc is dead easy to reach, situated at the station end of the town centre.

Cafe De Deugniet

Deugniet is a dark brown café right in the heart of Den Bosch. In fact, it's on the same street as the Brabants Museum. Though this doesn't mean it's on a main road, in fact it's a bit of a backwater. Though I think you'll agree that it's worth going slightly out of your way for. If I tell you that it's a dark brown café, you should get an idea how it looks. There's a dark wooden bar counter, a lovely selection of gleaming glasses decorating the bar back and old brass beer fonts. The only thing it lacks are windows. (It's like being in Krakow.) Tim Webb mentions Veulen in his guide, but just to say that its's the only ABT café (Alliantie van Bier Tapperijen - an association of specialist beer pubs) he doesn't give a full listing. I'm not so fussy. Especially when it's next door to another beer bar (Bar Le Duc) that I've already included. If you check the opening times, you'll notice that (in the Winter) Veulen is sometimes open a bit earlier that its neighbour. There is a small outside seating area.

It's an indication of Anver's popularity that, despite its enormous size, there wasn't a seat to be found at one o' clock on a Sunday afternoon. Just as well global warming makes ii possible to sit comfortably outside at the arse end of November. Describing the exact style of the interior is a little tricky. The best I can come up with is a cross between a Parisian cafe and a Czech beer hall. The photo to the left may give you a better idea of what I mean. Though the crowds inside also hindered photography (at least that's my excuse for the crappy quality of the picture). The beer list has a few unusual items on it - Brugse Zot Gouden Carolus Tripel and Classic, Cuvée des Trolls, and, most surprisingly, Edelweiss wheat beer from Austria. I've never spotted that in Holland before. Come to think of it, I've never seen it outside Austria. I particularly liked the section of the menu - praiseworthy for its honesty - entitled "Trendy Bieren". Tiger and Desperados were the entries, should you be interested. I like to hope that anyone using my guides would have more taste than to order either. Another laudable feature is the no smoking section, something that is depressingly rare in Holland.

I had wanted to drop by Kandinsky for a very long time. Everything I read about it only increased my desire. It didn't disappoint. Immediately in its favour is its useful position between the station and town centre - always handy for someobe like me who travels by train. I find ending at a pub within a couple of minutes' stumble of the station the best plan. After a hard day's researching, stumble is the best description of my attempts at forward movement. As traditional Dutch pubs go, Kandinsky is fairly light brown, the simple, clean lines only disturbed by the beer memorabilia crowding the walls. A corner pub not far from Tilburg station. It's a lightish-brown cafe (about 6 on a scale of 10), with wood playing a dominant role. The beer list is unashamedly Belgian, a few German wheat beers and Guinness aside. Whoops, I almost missed the 20 Dutch beers at the start of the menu. It contains the usual Het Ij and La Trappe suspects, but also a couple from Scheldebrouwerij. There are regular special events, such as a "Belgian Beer Week" in November and a "Dutch Beer Week" in March. A strong dark ale, named, rather prosaicly "Kandinsky", is brewed for them by Drie Horne. Frustrated by Tribunaal's failure to open at the advertised time, I entered Stoffel with little expectation of more than somewhere to save me from soiling my trousers. What I found was an extremely pleasant surprise. Look at the photo above and you can see why I didn't expect much. Don't be deceived, inside it's far more welcoming than its exterior betrays. A bare board floor, panelled walls and rough wooden tables give it a quite traditional feel. The number of beers available was another shock of the good type: about as good as you'll find in a non-specialist outlet. One feature I've seen nowhere else is the faucet in the gents. It's in the form of a beer tap. Very classy (at least I think it is).
