Gothenburg and its Pubs
Gothenburg, with a population of around 750,000, is Sweden's second largest city. If only they had been as diligent as the capital in retaining the character of the old town. That said, it's a relaxed and inviting city, especially in the Summer.

For some reason, even though it is about half the size of Stockholm, it has proportionally far fewer specialist beer bars. The upside is that the city sprawls far less than the capital, making a walking crawl a realistic option.

There may be fewer dedicated beer outlets, but that doesn't me that you will have to do without cask beer. I can remember when Glasgow and Middlesbrough had fewer real ale pubs than Gothenburg has today. I don't know about you, but anywhere that goes to the effort of obtaining cask ale outside the UK will always have a place in my heart. I hope that you will demonstrate that the trouble has been worthwhile.

Public transport
For those wanting to avoid any unnecessary walking the city has been sensible enough to retain its tram network. You can find a map of the system here. The official website of Göteborgs Spårvägar has detailed timetable and ticket information.

A British-style pub in the cellar of the luxury hotel Elite Plaza. It's part of a chain that has outlets all over Sweden.

They serve real ale occassionly, either British or from the local microbrewery Ahlafors. Fullers is usually sold on a fake handpump. It seems sometimes this is passed off as real ale, so beware.

The bottled range has plenty of good Belgian beer (Achel, Westvleteren, Rochefort, old Gueuze), a couple of American, plus some good British ones (Fuller's 1845, Traquair House).

A vaulted cellar bar with a red tile floor, long wooden tables and benches. The sparse decoration is formed mostly by old beer advertising material. The area set aside for eating is a bit more posh - there are tablecloths. In terms of claustrophobia, it's very much like being back in Krakow.

The bottled selection has some Swedish micros - Gamlestans Bryggeri Göteborg, Grebbestads Bryggeri, Tärnö Bryggeri - and beers from Belgium, GB, America, Germany, Finland, Denmark and a few more. It should include something to tempt just about anyone.
