Stockholm and its Pubs Stockholm has a reasonable number of specialist beer bars, including a couple of truly outstanding ones. The majority of such pubs, as is fairly obvious from their names, are intended to be in a British or Irish style, though the degree of authenticity varies wildly. The years of weird alcohol laws seem to have killed off any type of indigenous bar. The British pub is a reasonable enough starting point, but it would be nice to see a distinct Swedish tradition emerge. The best Stockholm bars are well worth a visit, especially for fans of cask-conditioned beer. Not only British real ale, but also Swedish-brewed versions, are available in many pubs in Stockholm. Unfortunately for the foreign visitor, most of the interesting pubs lie outside the modern city centre of Norrmalm and the historic Gamla Stan. If you're not a great fan of walking, it's worth investing in Rabatt-kuponger for the T-bana (160 SEK for 8 journeys journeys in the central zone) to take advantage of Stockholm's good public transport system. Akkurat is Sweden's most famous, and arguably best, specialist beer bar. It's to be found in the Södermalm district, south of the Gamla Stan. Not that the exterior is very promising. It would be easy to assume that it was some dull, modern bar. It occupies the ground floor of a hideous modern concrete building, which needs of a few sticks of dynamite to improve its looks. Inside, it's pretty spacious and there have been some noble attempts to make it cosy and pub-like, but disguising the brutalist architecture totally is an impossible task. There are some pleasant enough bits of leaded glass and the odd old wooden door, but it looks as tacked on as it obviously is. For those wishing to shortern their lives, there's a carbon monoxide terrace outside with a wonderful view of a busy intersection. What is really important - much more so than the slightly dodgy décor - is the beer selection. When you see the six handpulls on the bar, the details of the interior design don't really seem that important any more. The casks of beer on stillage behind the bar are an even more beautiful sight. There are usually 3 or 4 cask-conditioned beers on sale at any given time, the precise beers changing constantly. Occasionally the cask beers will have a theme - such as a selection of Scotish ales. They even managed to persuade Pripps to produce a cask version of the legendary Carnegie Porter, an experiment that surely must be worth repeating. This was the first pub outside the UK, along with he Oliver Twist, to receive Cask Marque accreditaion, which says something about the quality of the beer. There is also a wide range of Swedish draught beers, including examples from some of the better new micros. The bottled range is extensive with many American microbrews which are rarely seen outside the States. The malt whisky selection is equally impressive, though the prices of these can be truly frightening. A heavy night's tasting should come to about the price of a terraced house in Bradford. A full beer list can be found on their website. Highly recommended for the imaginative and intersting beer list, despite its aesthetic shortcomings.

A corner pub in the British style. There are two ground floor rooms, one like a taproom with a bare wooden floor an a long bar counter, the second more like a lounge bar with padded seats and a carpet. In the callar is a large bar where live music is performed. The bottled selection is Swedish/British/American/Belgian. It includes beers from the Jämtlands micro, Fullers and Chimay. Located in the Södermalm district.

The Södermalm branch of the pub chain. This one doesn't ever seeem to offer cask-conditioned ale. The bottled selection is about half British half Belgian, with a few Swedish, too. Includes beers from Black Sheep, Caledonian, and half a dozen genuine trappists.

Black and Brown Inn is another very British type of pub. It is, in many ways, the typical corner boozer. The bottled selection is from Britain, the USA, Belgium and the Czech Republic. In the Södermalm district, not that far from Akkurat and Oliver Twist.

Pub in a the ground floor of a 17th century building. Despite the name, the door isn't blue. The name is taken from a 17th century pub in the area. Because the building is a listed monument, the door cannot be painted blue. It was a bank between 1910 and 1950, then later a shop and an office. It opened as a pub in 1993. There is a small seating area outside on the pavement. Bottled beer is almost exclusively Swedish, including beers from Nils Oscar, Zeunerts and Avesta. It's one of the many beer pubs the trendy Södermalm district of Stockholm.

Stylish modern cafe/bar restaurant concentrating on Belgian beer and food. Fairly clean and minimalist in design. The bottled beers are all Belgian, but, given that restriction, the selection is excellent including Westvleteren and Achel. The draught beers, unsurprisingly include virtually a full set from Moortgat (the brewers of Duvel). The Maredsous 10 must be about the strongest beer you'll find on draught in Stockholm.

A large brewpub in an old customs house, right on the waterfront in Stockholm's old town. The view of the deep-blue water of the harbour and ferries bustling between the islands that make up the city is not to be missed. Breathtaking is the only word to describe it. It is notable for being the first brewpub in Sweden. Inside, everything has been done in a simple and tasteful, if slightly bland, fashion. Lots of wood, prints of sailing ships, that sort of thing. The coppers of the brewery itself form the centrepiece, surrounded by a huge island bar. All very chique, except for the televisions blaring in every possible corner, including the toilets, which I found very bizarre. In the Summer, you can enjoy the view from the outside seating. Thankfully, the old policy of only brewing a single beer - pale lager, what a surprise - has been dropped and the intention is to have six house draught beers. As you can probably guess from the name, this pub specialises in whisky. On the beer side, they have a good selection of beer from Sweden's more interesting microbreweries, with 16 of the draughts coming from smaller breweries. In the Gamla Stan. A pub which claims to have the largest selection of draught beer from Swedish micros. Looking at the (very long) list, I see no reason to doubt them. Owned by the same people as Gledfiddich Warehouse No.68. Just for variation, the bottled selection includes a few Belgian classics. In Kungsholmen. A corner pub in a 19th Century tenenment block. The interior simple and quite traditional in design, with an island bar and a wooden floor. There is a small seating area on the pavement. It offers some rare Swedish micro-brewed beers on draught. The large windows make the interior very light. Overall, it's not a bad attempt at a British pub. The bottled range is about half Belgian, mostly trappist or tripel style ales. In the Norrmalm district. John Holland reports (November 2006): "Not brilliant to be honest."

A specialist beer pub in a restarined modern style. They plan eventually to stock 2500 different beers. There´s a pretty good selection of Swedish, American, German, Belgian, Dutch, Czech and British beers, as well as from the very highly rated Norwegian micro, Nøgne Ø. John Holland reports (November 2006): "Decent selection of Swedish micros' beers. Recommended. By the way it did a decent Light and a Dark house Lager that the barman claimed where specially brewed for them. However the barman would not say other than that they were brewed by a Swedish micro who exactly brewed them." [They are brewed by Åbro] Expensive, even by Swedish standards.

A bar run by one of Stockholm's microbreweries, Nils Oscar. Unsusprisingly, they sell pretty much the full Nils Oscar range. In Kungsholmen. John Holland reports (November 2006): "Quite poor really as it did not have a good selection of Nils Oscar's beers!"

A long thin corner bar, situated in a modern appartment block that at least makes some effort not to stick out like a whole handful of sore thumbs. Outside is a small seating area (weather permitting). It's chockful of the bought-by-the kilo victoriana, but who cares when there are real working beer engines on the bar. There is usually more than one cask-conditioned beer. On the occasions of my visits, they were at least up to the standard of cask beer in the UK. The people from Cask Marque seen to agree, haven given it their accreditation. It's one of Stockholm's premier beer pubs, with an awe-inspiring and eclectic selection of draught beers. The bottled section is no less impressive, with a wide choice of styles from Belgium, Sweden, the UK, the Czech Republic and the USA. Not surprisingly, it can get quite crowded. Their web site is very informative and includes a full beer list. In the Södermalm district, not that far from Akkurat.

As you might just about guess from the name, this is a pub specialising in Czech beer. And a pretty impressive list of draught Czech beeers they have. It's the only pub in Sweden to have sold unpasteurised Pilsner Urquell by gravity from a wooden barrel (I didn't even know it existed). Sadly, this was a one-off for their Pilsner Urquell week. John Holland reports (November 2006): "Okay if you like a wide range of Czech beers to sample."

Stockholm Pub Guide

Beer shops

As you should already be aware, full-strength beer is only sold in state-run shops called Systembolaget. These used to be only open Monday to Friday and had a Soviet-style system where you had to ask for your purchases at a counter and wait for the assistant to fetch them from the storeroom. Things have got a little better in recent years, with many opting adventurously for self-service and Saturday opening being introduced.

A Systembolaget that specialises in beer. Self-service. Here is what Gunnar H Eriksson says: "The self-service outlet with the largest beer selection, they are often the only place in Stockholm where you can find rare beers; best time is the first week of every month when new arrivals are put on sale. (As an example: news in May 2007 - Einbecker Mai-Ur-Bock, Anchor Bock Beer, St Sylvestre Bière Nouvelle 2007, Saison Dupont, Slottskällans BelgoDubbel, Cantillon Iris)." And he should know - he lives in Stockholm.
