Introduction | |
Bayreuth - a beer town? Bayreuth is a famous place. Most people will have heard of the town, even though they might have difficulty finding it on a map. It's fame is based mostly on a guy called Wagner or something. Wrote operas, I think. Not many people know this, but Bayreuth is also quite a beer town. Up until the 1980's, three companies (Schinner, Götschel and Becher) were still brewing in the Kommunbräuhaus. Sadly, these days are now gone, as is the Kommunbräuhaus, which was demolished in 1993. There was a tradition of bakers doubling up as brewers - "Beckenbrauer". They used the communal brewery to mash and lagered their beers in the hills around the town (the Herzogkeller is on one such site). |

Want to know more about
Fanconian beer? If you're after yet more Franconian beers (and they are mostly worth hunting out, believe me), "The Franconian Beer Guide" is packed full of handy information. If you're still living in the paper world, "Die Neue Frankische Brauereikarte" by Stefan Mack (Verlag Stefan Mack, 1996, ISBN 3-927868-00-0) is a wonderful celebration of Franconian brewing, as well as containing everything you could ever want to know about all 300+ breweries. |
