Hannover Pub Guide
Bars - Brewpubs - Beer gardens

Introduction
Hannover, capital of the German state Niedersachsen, is a bustling town with around half a million inhabitants. This is a short guide to beer pubs in centre of the city.

Despite the city's size it has only onr brewpub. There are two more substantial breweries: Gilde (now owned by Inbev) and Herrenhausen (independent).
Hannover Beer
Hannover was renowned throughout northern Germany for its own beer style, Broyhan. It was invented by Cord Broyhan in 1526. In style, it was a top-fermented pale wheat beer, something similar ro Leipziger Gose or Berliner Weisse. Like most of the north German styles it was destroyed by a combination of the Reinheitsgebot and the introduction of lager. Gilde still brew a beer called Broyhan, though it is just another pale lager.

One local beer which does still survive is Lüttje Lage. A dark, top-fermented beer it's a sort of Schankbier Alt. It's usually drunk simultaneously with Korn, both glasses being held in the same hand. I imagine it takes a little practice to perform this feat without soaking your shirt. Examples are brewed by Gilde, Herrenhäuser and Schaumburger.

The legendary Mumme is still produced, but is now an alcohol-free malt drink that is mixed with other beers. One brewery, the appropriately-named Braunschweiger Mumme, still makes it.

A brewpub with, seemingly, a single product (a pils).

Looks like it's a bit of a yuppy hangout.

A report from Nick Taylor:
"They have live bands Friday and Saturday night. They also have seating outside on the pavement with plant pots with small trees and fairy lights to cordon drinkers off from the passing public. They do only sell and brew one beer, Hanoversch, which you can buy in different sizes up to the size of a carry out keg. Great Goulash soup. Very modern and younger people that frequent. Worth calling in if ever in Hannover."

A report from Nick Taylor:
"Cracking little pub just round the corner from Paulaner am Thielenplatz. A sort of sports bar with satellite television showing all sorts of sports. Landlord friendly but beware of the very large German shepherd dog that seems to check everyone who walks in. when we left we had the same amount of limbs as when we arrived, so that was a relief. Very good selection of beers on tap. They also do bar meals, good selection. Very near the train station."
