Goslar Pub Guide |
Bars - Brewpubs - Beer gardens |
Introduction | |
Why should I produce a pub guide for a small town in Niedersachsen?
Because of its one great (beer) call to fame - as home of Gose. Not that this medieaval town of 45,000 inhabitants doesn't have other charms. It's a UNESCO-listed world heritage site. |

A former rewpub, now owned by Binding
(who are in turn owned by Oetker). Lars Marius Garshol reports: "This is a huge rather touristy place, with outdoor serving. It's quite OK, however, and the food is nice. The waiter told me they haven't brewed themselves for about 10 years, having been bought out by Binding. After they got a new owner in November 2007 the Wolpertinger beers disappeared from the menu." A pub now tied to the putative King of Bavaria's brewery.
The location is both historic and convenient - in the cellar of the town
hall. Inside it's a typical cellar beerhall - big pine tables, vaulted ceiling. In the Summer, there is a beer garden on the market place. Sounds very nice. |

A paulaner house in an attractive half-timbered building.
The interior is matchingly rustic, with many exposed beams. It offers a
wide selection of traditional Bavarian food. There is a beer garden at the
rear. Lars Marius Garshol reports: "There is a children's playroom in the beer garden at the back (a life-saver for us). The food and service are quite good, and they actually serve some interesting bottled beers, like Thurn und Taxis Roggenbier and Paulaner Salvator. I really liked the place. |

Pub/restaurant in a half-timbered old water mill. It has several
rooms and a beer garden next to the river. Most importantly, it sells draught
Gose, in the town where it was born. It's recently started selling its own Gose, brewed for them by the Altenauer Brauerei. Lars Marius Garshol reports: "Intensely touristy, but still nice in a way. Rooms are on two levels. The food looked good. Quiet, no music. It's really a restaurant, not a pub." Photo courtesy Lars Marius Garshol. |

Marius Garshol reports: "Nice apparently family-run last refurbished in the early 70s, by the looks of it. Nice, quiet, very rural German style to it, which I very much enjoyed. Good service, didn't try the food. Quiet, with low piped radio." Photos courtesy Lars Marius Garshol. |

Lars Marius Garshol reports: "Intensely touristy café with indifferent service, indifferent food, and Disney-style decor. Located right next to the market square, by the brewery which makes the two Gose beers. Serves both the Gose Hell and the Gose Dunkel version. The only place I found in Goslar which has the dark version, and so worth it for that." |

Marius Garshol reports: "Modern hotel built around an old tower that was once part of the city wall. Inside the tower is a nice historical restaurant with smaller rooms leading off from the big central room. Food looks great, but didn't try it. Serves the Gose Hell. Has a few beers, but sadly did not note which." Photos courtesy Lars Marius Garshol. |

This is NOT a pub, but a museum house with an old gose brewhouse.
It could be interesting for the beer tourist. |
